How many crunches do I have to do to get a flat stomach?

Doing crunches may seem like the obvious way to get a flat stomach, but spot reducing is not the answer to that age-old problem. The most common reason that we do not have a flat stomach is due to the bodyfat that we have covering that region of our body. Remember that fat cells only shrink and grow in reponse to the bodyfat we have to store or use for energy. They do not melt nor do they turn into muscle. So the best way to decrease the amount of bodyfat is to increase our calories expended through exercise and decrease the amont of calories consumed through proper nutriton. Also keep in mind that we have to consume the proper amount of calories to support our bodily functions plus the energy needed to maintain movement throughout the day. Too little calories will put us into starvation mode which can actually increase fat stores while proper nutrition and caloric intake will help us to decrease the amount of fat we hold on to as energy.
